AFRIMA withdraws the right to host from Ghana

The International Committee of All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) has withdrawn Ghana's hosting privileges for AFRIMA's 2019 and 2020 editions.
AFRIMA cited the host country's lack of capacity to meet the financial and contractual obligations entered into on July 12, 2018, necessary to retain hosting the largest music event in Africa.
After several months of conferences and consultations with appropriate stakeholders, the body reached a decision on Monday to remedy the scenario with the expectation that Ghana would provide concrete assurances and guarantees to fulfill its contractual commitments to host AFRIMA's 2019 and 2020 editions after its disappointment Performance of the agreement during the 2018 edition of the awards held in Accra between 21 and 24 November.
Fox Meek reports that the decision of the African Union (AU) and AFRIMA to grant Ghana a three-term hosting right (2018-2020) followed President Nana Akufo Addo's statement of 21 May 2018 that he wanted to host the AFRIMA Awards in Ghana during the AFRIMA 2018 Calendar Unveiling Ceremony in Accra.
AFRIMA's International Advisor, Rikki Stein, while thanking Ghana's youth and media said:
"It was a tough choice for us to remove the awards hosting privileges from the Republic of Ghana for the next two years (2019 and 2020 editions).
As an award owned by the African people, it is designed to travel around the continent offering individuals the real African experience.
"He added:" We have some fond memories of our moment in Ghana immersing ourselves in lifestyle and music and we have established excellent relationships among the Ghanaian people.
We look forward to returning to Ghana at a more opportune moment.
However, we can not afford to compromise AFRIMA's laudable vision standard to develop a truly African brand that connects Africans and builds Africa's equity.
The scenario facing Ghana has the potential to erode the goodwill and giant steps we have made in Africa through the prizes.
Mr. Stein, former manager and friend of Afrobeat Legend, Fela Kuti, added that AFRIMA aims to boost the tourism and entertainment equity of a host nation as the host gets an influx of global and African dignitaries, AFRIMA nominees, music stars and managers attending the four-day program of operations.
The AFRIMA International Committee said it is working to determine a new host nation to be announced in August 2019 for the 6th edition of the annual AFRIMA.
